Peter Pawlowski has a couple of audio players to offer. First there’s foobar2000, an advanced and quite popular audio player that my colleague Frederick Barton reviewed a while ago, concluding that “foobar2000 provides you with anything you need from an audio player. Organization, ease of use and quality are just a few features you will find.”

Then there’s Boom, a simple audio player for Windows that does not have to be installed. As Peter Pawlowski explained, the Boom audio player is meant for casual computer users who do not want to waste their time learning how to use some sophisticated software application. Boom is so incredibly easy to use that casual computer users are sure to love it.

As mentioned above, Boom does not have to be installed. To get started with this media player, you need only download an executable and run it (no admin rights required; Windows 7 or newer required for full functionality). Click the wrench icon from the upper right hand corner on the application’s interface, select file and you’ll see an option that says “install to removable medium.” Use this option if you want to use Boom on the go.

Since it is meant for casual users who can’t be bothered to learn the intricacies of sophisticated software, Boom has an incredibly simple interface – which is nice. Said interface provides support for themes – which is also nice. A total of 4 themes are available for the interface: Classic, Black, White, and Graphite. Check out the Quick Look video that accompanies this article to see how easy it is to switch from one theme to another.

Here’s a quick look at what can be done with Boom: play audio files; pause, repeat, rewind, fast-forward; volume control; filter the list by genres, artists, and more; show in Explorer; select additional music folders; pick the output device. It’s not much, but then again, Boom is a very simple audio player.

Boom is free software.

If you’re looking for a dead simple, free and portable audio player, go get Peter Pawlowski’s Boom!

Pros

Boom is portable; you won’t have to install it to use it on your Windows PC. The very simple interface provides support for themes. Boom is a free and easy to use media player.

Cons

None that I could think of.
